There was no shortage of spirited debate in the Empire’s opinion section this year. With a tumultuous political landscape on the national and state levels, as well as an October city election, it’s no surprise Juneauites and Outsiders alike wrote the Empire to debate, inform, express their opinion and sometimes just vent.

The state’s budget crisis, the debate over health care reform and the buyout of Alaska Electric Light and Power were all popular topics which spurred lively opinions this year.

Here are the top-10 most read letters to the editor and my turn submissions for 2017:

1. Trump’s budget hurts Alaskans

2. AEL&P buyer will spike prices

3. Open letter to Sen. Murkowski

4. State workers are Alaskans too

5. Fake news is prevalent in Alaska

6. China’s secret? It owes Americans nearly $1 trillion

7. The CDQ Program is Broken and Must be Fixed

8. When the sparrow meets the horse

9. Uber is right for Juneau

10. Alaskans should have the final say on Pebble Mine
