SEADOGS, JMR locate lost hikers near Spaulding Meadows Trail

Three hikers who became lost near the Spaulding Meadows Trail in Auke Bay were located and escorted back to the trailhead safely Saturday night by search and rescuers.

Alaska State Troopers said they received a 911 call from one of the three adult hikers just before 8 p.m. Saturday, according to an online trooper dispatch.

SEADOGS and JMR members responded and located the group. No injuries were reported.

Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters identified the hikers as Linda Murphy, 62, Debora Soto, 51, and Kathrine Andrews, 55. All three are from Juneau.

Spokesperson Peters said the group called for help on a cellphone after following a route off the main trail marked with flagging tape.

“The hikers lost track of the hiking tape,” Peters said in an email to the Empire. “Once they realized this, they tried to hike downhill towards where they thought the tail was, but came across a creek and they were unable to safely continue.”

Spaulding Meadows Trail is located about 13 miles from downtown Juneau, accessible off Glacier Highway, and leads to a series of muskeg meadows. It also links up with the Auk Nu Trail, which leads to the popular John Muir Cabin.
