On Nov. 25, The American Red Cross released a list of tips for a safe Thanksgiving.
“The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest times of the year for travelers and we want to make sure everyone remains safe on their trip,” said Beth Bennett, regional communications officer, Red Cross of Alaska. “Cooking is the number one cause of home fires, so we also have information cooks can follow to avoid a fire.”
For travel safety, they recommended obeying the rules of the road, not following other drivers too closely and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained.
For cooking safety, the Red Cross recommended that if the stove is on, it should always remain attended; all cooking appliances should be double checked before going to sleep to make they are turned off. All flammable items should be kept from any kitchen appliance that generates heat. Cooking surfaces should be cleaned regularly to prevent grease buildup, which could lead to fires.
