Juneau airport and public transit drop mask requirement

Nationwide, many locations have made masks optional.

Following a Transportation Security Administration statement Monday, the Juneau International Airport, Capital Transit and CAPITAL AKcess will no longer require mask use, the City and Borough of Juneau Announced.

The announcement comes after a Florida district court judge voided the federal mask requirement.

The Alaska Marine Highway System announced late Tuesday that it would also no longer require masks in its buildings or aboard its vessels.

The TSA mask mandate has been in place for more than two years, and subject to contention at all levels. Mandates in schools and the state Capitol, put in place during the earlier stages of the pandemic, were recently allowed to lapse, with masks becoming optional. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that people wear masks in indoor transportation settings.

Nationwide, many cities switched to a masks optional policy, according to the Associated Press, but some entities, such as New York City, continue to require masks in airports and on public transit.

Juneau had 61 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the last week, according to the state Department of Health and Social Services.
