Free AWARE training geared toward men

Gene Tagaban and Juneau AWARE (Aiding Women in Abuse & Rape Emergencies) are teaming up to help young men and their mentors end male violence in Alaska with a free one-day training.

Compass mentor training is “a time to share the meaning of living a respectful life,” according to an AWARE press release. Attendees will join Tagaban and AWARE staff to explore “healthy masculinity,” and, “ending men’s violence and healing from patriarchy.” It takes place Sunday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Zach Gordon Youth Center.

The training begins with attendees sharing stories and talking about power and privilege. Then, a presentation of the roots of male violence against women and the impact of patriarchal masculinity. After that, a training titled “What is intersectionality and why is it important?” The training ends with a program titled “Becoming Men — what does healthy masculinity look like?”
