Cause of weekend car crash still unknown

Police are still investigating the cause of a car crash in the Mendenhall Valley that sent four people to the hospital Saturday evening.

Just before 7 p.m., a 2002 Chevy pickup and a 2009 Mitsubishi Gallant collided in a T-bone accident at the intersection of Mendenhall Loop Road and Stephen Richards Memorial Drive. An 18-year-old woman was driving the pickup, and a 56-year-old man was driving the Gallant with two passengers, according to police.

JPD spokesperson Erann Kalwara said that officers have not yet issued any citations related to the crash.

Capital City Fire/Rescue transported both drivers and the Gallant’s two passengers to Bartlett Regional Hospital. Hospital spokesperson Jim Strader said that four people matching the description of the car crash victims were treated at Bartlett. Three have since been discharged, but one — a passenger of the Gallant — was flown to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center for further treatment.

The crash shut down the intersection for about 45 minutes. Police don’t suspect that either driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, Kalwara said.
