Letter: Why I’m voting for Mary Becker

As someone who grew up in Juneau and has raised her children here, I’d like to recommend that all citizens of Juneau consider voting for Mary Becker for Assembly on Oct. 4.

I have known Mary for many years, beginning as my sixth grade teacher at Gastineau School. Mary was a caring and knowledgeable teacher who went out of her way to make sure that all of her students succeeded. She prepared us well for the future and we flourished. That same determination is evident today in Mary’s performance on the current assembly and her passion to have Juneau flourish into the future as a community.

Mary is still committed to education — especially funding our schools so that students continue to succeed. She also cares deeply that young families do well — first by providing good jobs in a healthy economy and also by working to ensure that affordable housing is available for families with growing needs.

Mary looks out for the older generation. She strongly believes that the senior sales tax exemption should extend beyond food to essentials necessary for healthy living such as bath tissue and cleaning supplies.

Please help Mary continue her lifetime of service to Juneau. Vote for Mary Becker on Oct. 4. She is committed to this community and is passionate to serve. Thank you!

Valerie Mertz,

Juneau
