Crimson Bears explode in second period with four goals

The Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team cruised to a 9-0 shutout win over the Palmer Moose on Saturday night at Treadwell Arena.

Dalton Hoy and Chance Turinsky each recorded a hat trick and were instrumental in helping the Crimson Bears run away with the game in the second period. Hoy scored his third goal of the game less than a minute into the frame and Turinsky scored back-to-back goals in the last five minutes to make it a 7-0 game. JDHS led 3-0 at the start of the period.

The win secured the series sweep for the Crimson Bears, who now improve to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the Railbelt Conference. JDHS won 5-1 on Friday.

“I feel like we were all in the right head space and just gave it our full effort,” Hoy said after the game.

Cameron Smith, Sam Bovitz and Tyler Weldon scored the other three goals while Turinsky, Bovitz, Josh Frisby, Ronan Lynch, Owen Squires, Blake Bixby, Ethan Welch and Finn Yerkes all had assists in the win. JDHS goaltender Cody Mitchell stopped 14 shots to record his first shutout of the season.

Seniors Bill Bosse and Cully Corrigan, two of the team’s primary goal scorers, sat out of the game due to injury. Playing tough defense and working as a team enabled others to pick up the scoring slack, according to JDHS coach Luke Adams.

“We’re finding out everybody can be a goal scorer if we do the right things, the little things,” Adams said. “Working hard in front of the net (and) playing good defense turns into goal-scoring opportunities for all our players, and that’s what we saw tonight. We got the bounces and they went in.”

Smith echoed his coach’s thoughts after the game.

“All of our guys had to step up, and that’s what happened,” Smith said. “Ronan, Dalton, Chance, they all stepped up and they did what had to be done.”

The Crimson Bears controlled the play in the first period and continued to dictate the pace of the game in second. Hoy shot in a rebound before Smith added another goal about nine minutes later. After his shot from the blue line was blocked, Smith regained control of the puck and skated 20 feet closer to the goaltender before firing the puck past him.

Turinsky then piled on his first two goals, the first from Lynch and the second off a long cross-ice pass from Welch. The beautiful feed offered the forward a clear path to the net — Palmer was behind the play due to an ill-timed line change — and Turinsky whipped a low shot that crept through the leg pads of Palmer goaltender Tiernan O’Rourke.

Turinsky scored his final goal two minutes into the third period before Weldon capped the scoring with 1:16 remaining.

“One thing I noticed about Juneau is they got more energy later in the game,” said Palmer coach Dean Wilson, who scouted JDHS last weekend at the Showdown Tournament. “They’re finishing checks better than they were last weekend, and that’s one of the big things that we’re working on.”

JDHS is off next weekend and faces Houston High School Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at Treadwell Arena.
