Griggs qualifies for regionals
The Juneau Ski Club’s JoJo Griggs qualified for the U16 Western Region Championship Series after two top-5 finishes in the Super G at the Alyeska Cup/Alaska State Championships Thursday in Girdwood.
Griggs raced in six different Cup races total: two in slalom, two in giant slalom and two in Super G.
In the first Super G race, Griggs was the fourth-fastest U16 skier of 14 finishers to cross the finish line. In her second Super G, she finished third in her age group of 12 finishers and fourth overall.
Piper Sage, Mary Grace Stahla, Randi von Wichman and Hannah Kragt, all of the Alyeska Ski Club, also qualified for the regional championships, hosted this year by Alyeska Ski Resort in late March.
Hoop Rats win in Seattle
The Hoop Rats Basketball Club sixth-grade travel team won the championship in Washington Youth Sports Presidents Day AAU Basketball Tournament last week.
In the championship game on Monday at Kent-Meridian High School, the Hoop Rats defeated Kent Elite 63-50.
The team finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.
The title qualifies them for the club division of the Washington Middle School Basketball Championships next month in Spokane.
The Hoop Rats seventh-grade team finished the Seattle tournament with two wins and two losses.
Nordic team at Mt. Lorne Loppet
The Juneau Nordic Ski Team (JNST) raced in the Mt. Lorne Loppet race near Whitehorse on Saturday, Feb. 17.
Arne Ellefson-Carnes and Melia Lu Trousil placed first in the junior 10-kilometer divisions.
In the juvenile female 5K, Linnea Lenfter, Katie McKenna and Annika Schwartz finished first, second and third, respectively. Finn Morley won first and Aaron Blust took third in the juvenile male 5K. Coach Merry Ellefson won the master’s 10K division.
A contingent of the JNST raced in the Buckwheat Ski Classic on Saturday in Skagway.
Glacier Swim Club in Juneau and D.C.
The Glacier Swim Club won first place in the 2018 Alaska Age Group Champs, which ended last Sunday.
Approximately 340 youth swimmers and over 20 swim clubs from around the state attended the meet.
GSC won the team title by totaling 962 points. The Northern Lights Swim Club of Anchorage came in second with 858 points. It was the first time GSC won the meet since 2014.
Over the same weekend, GSC’s Adrell Mulgrew-Truitt helped the Western Zone All-Star Team finish in third place at the 32nd annual Black History Swim Meet in Washington, DC.
Mulgrew-Truitt swam in 13 different events over the course of the two-day meet, coming in eighth place in the 200-yard butterfly.
The meet is sponsored by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and the United Black Fund, Inc.
