The final races of the Empire Cup running series are dwindling down, and locals made another solid push for the season point standings as they competed in the Homeless/Run for the Poor 5k and 1k on Saturday.

Hiram Henry, 42, was the overall winner with a time of 18 minutes and 34 seconds among 40 participants, edging David Phillips, 34, who hit 18:57. Henry is closing in on 40-44 year old male age group leaders Dan Edwards and Bryan Hitchcock for and Empire Cup trophy. Phillips leads the 30-34 age division and will not be challenged for a trophy as limited races remain.

The course started at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church annex and traveled along the bike path briefly towards the Mendenhall Glacier, turned to follow the path to Fred Meyer and then finished back at the church. The race was a fundraiser for the St. Vincent dePaul Society to assist the homeless with housing.

Stephanie Harvey, 27, was the top female finisher, and eighth overall, with a time of 22:22. Harvey has moved to within two points of 19-29 female age group leader Jenna Wiersma for that division title. Shannon Hasty, 45, placed 10th overall, second female, in a time of 23:49. Jennifer Thorsteinson, 33, edged Becky Bohrer, 37, by five seconds for the third female spot with a time of 25:55. Bohrer leads the 35-39 female age division with 209 points, as well as the overall global Empire Cup point total standings.

Reed Stoops, 66, finished ninth, making up point standings on 12th-place finisher Jeff Gnass, 69, in the 66-69 age division but with limited races remaining Gnass will earn the title. Jim Ustasiewski, 51, placed third in 19:35 to continue adding to his lead in the 50-54 age division.

Kaeden Quinto, 10, won the 1k run/walk in 10:04 for males and Irene Cashen, 87, topped females, and placed fourth overall among the seven participants with 12:08.

The next Empire Cup race is the Extra Tough 5K and 1-mile run/walk on Saturday at the Riverbend Elementary School Covered Playground. Registration is at 9 a.m., race starts at 10 a.m., cost is $10 for 18-under and $20 for 19-over pre-registration ($25 on race day). The race is a fundraiser for NAMI.
