JDHS finishes roadtrip at 2-1

Juneau-Douglas Yadaat.at Kalé senior Malia Miller became Alaska’s only girls prep soccer player to reach 100 career goals on Saturday in Anchorage.

The fleet-footed midfielder reached triple digits by scoring in a 4-1 win over East Anchorage. It was the latest in a string of individual milestones this month for Miller, who became the school and state’s all-time goal leader when she pocketed three goals against Ketchikan on Friday, May 3. JDHS’ Margaret Sekona held both of the previous records with 94 career goals.

The win came just two days after JDHS took on South Anchorage in a battle of the only two remaining unbeatens in the state. The Crimson Bears were 13-0-0 and the Wolverines 10-0-1 entering the match at SAHS.

JDHS lost 2-0 to South, which received goals from Carin Currier and Ally Green and a shutout from goaltender Alex Nowka. It marked JDHS’ first loss in 23 games — West Anchorage defeated JDHS 1-0 midway through last season in Juneau.

“We can’t say it was for lack of trying,” said JDHS coach Matt Dusenberry, who added his team outshot South 20-10.

The JDHS girls went on to top Service 3-0 Friday before squaring off against East Anchorage Saturday. Over the three games in Anchorage, Miller scored four goals while Kyla Bentz, Blake Plummer and Jasmin Holst each had one.
