Letter: March is Red Cross Month

The American Red Cross is recognizing the country’s everyday heroes during Red Cross Month.

Here in Juneau, Red Cross volunteers assist people during emergencies, teach lifesaving skills, or give financial donations to help people in need.

In fiscal year 2016, the Red Cross of Alaska responded to 233 local emergencies, installed 1,425 smoke alarms, and performed family follow-up on 796 Services to the Armed Forces cases. These acts of service truly save lives.

March has been recognized as Red Cross Month for more than 70 years. It’s the time for people to become community heroes by taking two simple steps. First, be ready for the next emergency by creating a preparedness plan for your home. Find help at redcross.org/preparedness. Second, test your smoke detectors, and ask your neighbors to do the same. If you don’t have smoke detectors, contact Kate Pifer at 209-1329 for assistance.

People can also join our mission by signing up to be a Red Cross volunteer, or financial contributor at redcross.org.

Thank you to all of the Red Cross supporters in Juneau who assist their neighbors during life’s darkest hours. We are deeply grateful.

Lori Wilson

Executive Director

American Red Cross of Alaska
