Letter: A pro-life presidency is something to be thankful for

On Jan. 20, we will see the inauguration of a new president. From the pro-life perspective, this is something to be thankful for. That day represents the departure from the White House of one of the most pro-abortion presidents we have seen to date. His replacement is a man who has voiced support for a number of pro-life, pro-family initiatives that will protect the rights of the unborn and their mothers.

Donald Trump has said as president he will nominate pro-life justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, defund Planned Parenthood which operates the largest and most aggressive chain of abortion clinics, sign into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which would end late term abortions nationwide and make the Hyde Amendment permanent law which protects taxpayers from having to pay for abortions. The repeal of Obamacare with its mandate that all insurance policies cover abortion is another positive step.

The above will advance the ultimate goal of protecting lives of the most defenseless members of the human family. We know that the abortion issue will never be resolved by political means only but that is certainly part of the solution. The law is a teacher and good pro-life initiatives will save many lives by establishing an environment in our society that supports and teaches the fundamental truth of the dignity and humanity of the child in the womb. However, ultimately this is a spiritual battle for the minds and hearts of people to end once and for all the practice of abortion which reflects the terrible spiritual disease we are suffering from the elimination of God from the public square.

The education and motivation of millions of people is a daunting task since it is in the best interests of the abortion industry to keep the public ignorant of the reality of abortion — what it is and what it does. Overcoming the culture of death mentality which dominates our judiciary, major media, entertainment and academic institutions has taken years but there are signs that the tide is turning against abortion by the public recognition that pregnancy is not a disease but a blessing.
