Weather warning issued for Juneau through Wednesday morning due to intense rain, wind

City advises residents to check boats; weather service says some river flooding possible.

This is a developing story.

Warnings about heavy rain that may cause flooding and winds gusting to 60 miles per hour until Wednesday morning have been issued by the National Weather Service Juneau.

A high wind warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to the NWS Juneau forecast. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with stronger gusts posing risks to loose objects and making travel difficult.

A notice issued by the City and Borough of Juneau’s Docks and Harbors Department “requests all boat owners to check your vessels.”

“Please make sure mooring lines are secure, pumps are working correctly and your boat is not accumulating rainwater,” the notice states.

An update published by NWS Juneau at 9:28 a.m. Tuesday states 0.77 inches of rain had fallen during the previous six hours and significantly more precipitation is expected.

“We expect rivers and streams to rise in response to rainfall over the next 24 hours, with Jordan Creek forecasted to reach 9.7 feet Tuesday evening,” the update states. “At this level, water will inundate the Jordan Square’s front and back parking lots, around Jordan Creek office condominiums with up to one foot of water. Some residential driveways will be flooded and cut off.”
