On Nov. 6, 1986, Steve Cowper prepared to assume his new position as Alaska’s next governor. Cowper claimed the seat after winning against opponent Arliss Sturgulewski during the statewide election on Tuesday. Cowper, who previously worked as a lawyer in Fairbanks, discussed his intention to cut the governor’s staff and reform the office.
In Fritz Cove, a woman found a confused bald eagle in her house after it flew through one of her glass windows, shattering the pane and spreading glass all over the floor. The eagle was left uninjured, excepting its inability to find a way out of the room.
