Tee Harbor home likely a total loss after fire, fire official says

A house near Tee Harbor is considered a total loss after a fire Friday morning, Capital City Fire/Rescue fire marshals said in a statement Friday.

Assistant Chief Ed Quinto was the first officer on the scene, he said, after a call came in at 8:04 a.m. Friday that a home on Randall Road was on fire. He said about half the house was ablaze when he arrived.

“It was intense,” Quinto said.

The house, Quinto said, is a two-story, 2,700-square foot building that also has an apartment attached on the side. The person renting the apartment, Quinto said, was the only person home at the time and was unharmed.

Fire Marshal Dan Jager said in a statement that the fire began in the kitchen unit of the apartment. The specific cause has not been determined, according to the statement, but the fire appears to be unintentional.

The house is a total loss, according to the statement. The house had recently been bought, Quinto said, and the new owners told CCFR responders that they had homeowners insurance. Quinto wasn’t sure if the renter had insurance. According to the City and Borough of Juneau website, the home was built in 1984 and is valued at $347,900.

A cat, Quinto said, appears to have escaped the house but is currently missing.

Responders took about an hour to put out the fire, Quinto said, and they had to move a large propane tank away from the house. No nearby homes were damaged, Quinto said.

A GoFundMe appeared Friday entitled “Walker Family Recovery Fund,” with the goal of raising $20,000 for the five-person family that lives at the home. As of Friday evening, it had raised more than $2,300.
