SUV strikes pedestrian on Vanderbilt

A sports utility vehicle struck a pedestrian on Vanderbilt Hill Road at noon Friday, seriously wounding the person, police say.

First responders took the person, later identified by police as a 14-year-old boy, to Bartlett Regional Hospital. The boy’s family has been notified of the situation.

By 2:30 p.m. Friday, the boy was listed in stable condition in the critical care unit, BRH spokeswoman Katie Bausler told the Empire.

Juneau Police Department officers were still on scene as of 2 p.m, investigating the crash. The 2003 silver Infinity SUV was still on the roadway, as were personal items of the boy’s: two sneakers and a hat.

Police said in an official statement the Infinity was driven by a 65-year-old man. The statement did not say whether he was cited.

From the way the SUV was oriented, it appears as if the driver was headed toward Egan Drive from Vanderbilt. The accident took place about 20 yards before the Dragon Inn across from Western Auto.

There is no crosswalk in that area.
