The trial for a man suspected of stabbing and seriously injuring another man at a Thane Road beach party has been postponed until early September.

Joshua Levi Brown, 37, is facing one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault in the alleged attack on Monte Nix.

Brown’s trial was scheduled to start Aug. 7, but his attorney, Assistant Public Defender Grace Lee, requested a continuance in Juneau Superior Court last week.

Brown earlier had requested new counsel during an in-chambers hearing, which was denied by Judge Philip Pallenberg. During a status conference, Brown and Lee had a testy exchange before Lee asked for more time to prepare for the trial. It was rescheduled very tentatively for Sept. 5, with a pre-trial conference set for Aug. 28.

The Juneau Police Department had received a 911 call at about 11:15 p.m. April 22 reporting the stabbing, which happened near parked vehicles and the roadway, in an area above the beach where the party-goers had a bonfire.

Several witnesses reported Nix and Brown in an altercation that night, with Brown fleeing the scene.

Nix was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, and told officers he does not remember anything that happened; others at the party told him he had been stabbed three times with a box cutter.

Nix reportedly had extensive blood loss from stab wounds that went through his stomach, pancreas and spleen; the main artery to the liver also was lacerated. Nix was sent to Seattle, where part of his pancreas and his spleen were removed.

Brown was arrested on May 4 and remains in custody at Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
