‘Powerful’ film on dementia treatment playing for free Thursday

The power of music will be on full display at free movie showings Thursday.

The Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska is providing two free showings of “Alive Inside,” a documentary about the way music can fight memory loss and some of the activists who have taken unconventional approaches to health care. Both showings — one at noon and one at 5:30 p.m. — are at the Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska conference room at 3225 Hospital Drive in Juneau.

The film, which won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, follows people such as Dan Cohen, who founded the nonprofit Music &Memory that helps restore a sense of self in those suffering from dementia. Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska Education Specialist Amber Smith said the movie relates to both the Juneau Pioneer Home and Wildflower Court, which both are certified to use the Music &Memory treatment.

“It’s really powerful,” Smith said. “It shows actual people who have dementia being exposed to music of their choice.”

There’s no prior registration required for the movies, and Smith said the event is casual enough where attendees can even bring their own lunch or dinner along.
