Juneau man arrested in Craig after altercation in house and with police

Suspect threatened to kill person at knifepoint and damaged house, tased by troopers after fleeing.

A Juneau man was arrested Saturday in Craig on suspicion of threatening to kill the occupant of a house with a knife, causing several thousand dollars of damage to the house and getting into a violence confrontation with police after fleeing the home, according to the Alaska State Troopers.

Michael Starr was found “wearing only a sweatshirt and covered in blood” when troopers responded to the house after receiving a report of serious property damage and a disturbance, according to an AST dispatch.

“There was broken glass and other damaged items throughout the residence,” the dispatch states. “Starr fled the residence and was later located by troopers under the porch. Starr was tased while under the porch after being given several verbal commands to come out, throwing rocks at the troopers, and threatening to kill them. Starr was successfully handcuffed after being tased and extricated from under the porch. Starr continued to violently resist until he was placed in the Craig Jail.”

Further investigation revealed Starr threatened one occupant of the house at knifepoint, assaulted a woman and did extensive damage including throwing a tricycle through a double-pane glass window.

Starr was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of fourth-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest and violating conditions of release. He had a felony first appearance at the Sitka Courthouse on Sunday and a preliminary hearing is scheduled Jan. 23 at the Ketchikan Courthouse.
