A storm moving through Southeast Alaska has prompted warnings of high wind, flooding and landslides in Juneau.
The National Weather Service released an alert Sunday warning of sustained winds up to 40 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph expected. The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today for Juneau.
“High winds will blow around unsecured objects and may damage property and cause power outages,” the Sunday NWS warning states. “Travel will be difficult.”
A flood watch issued yesterday states that excessive rainfall in the Juneau and Douglas Area may cause “minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas” and that “creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.” The weather service expects the hazard to remain until 4 a.m. Tuesday.
The weather service issued a flood advisory for Montana Creek on Saturday that expired at noon Sunday.
The weather has taken its toll on local natural areas. Two landslides along Auke Lake Trail prompted the City and Borough of Juneau Parks and Recreation to close the trail on Saturday.
“Please stay clear of the trail and out of the lake until weather conditions improve and staff can clear the debris,” City and Borough of Juneau said in a Saturday statement.
