Good Grief walks return for summer

Every Wednesday for the next 14 weeks, those dealing with grief will have an opportunity to join a community and get some fresh air.

Good Grief Walks resume today, operating from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday until Aug. 9. The walks, which take place on the paved pathway at Twin Lakes, are geared toward those who have recently lost a loved one or others grappling with grief. Those who are interested in learning more about bereavement and end-of-life situations are also welcome.

Hospice &Home Care of Juneau — a division of Catholic Community Service — is organizing the walks, which are in their second year of operation and are open to anybody in Juneau. The structure is very relaxed, as registration is free and no RSVP is required. People can show up for all 14 of the walks or just one or two.

Erin Walker-Tolles, Catholic Community Service’s Executive Director, has participated in the walks in the past and stressed that participants aren’t forced to share their thoughts with each other if they don’t want to.

“It’s just nice to get out and walk,” Walker-Tolles said. “Sometimes people talk, sometimes they don’t. But we’re all together.”
