Gearing up for the Fourth of July

Red, white and blue abound as kids deck out their rides in Douglas.

Despite the rain outside, the Douglas Library parking garage was buzzing with pre-Fourth of July excitement as approximately 80 children, accompanied by their families, gathered for the annual bicycle and sidewalk chalk decorating event.

Participants adorned their bikes, scooters and other forms of transportation with red, white and blue streamers, flags, garlands and lights in preparation for the Fourth of July parades. The main parade through downtown Juneau starts at 11 a.m. at the Department of Labor Building on West 8th St., with the Douglas Children’s Parade assembling at Sayéik: Gastineau Community School at 1:30 p.m.

“I love seeing everyone come out and connect with each other,” said Miah Lager, a fourth-year member of the Douglas 4th of July Committee. “It’s a sense of togetherness.”

The Douglas 4th of July Committee, a non-profit organization reliant on donations, provided all the necessary supplies for the bike decorating activity. Reflective materials, noisemakers and glow-in-the-dark decorations were available to ensure participants stand out as organizers put an emphasis on safety.

“Being part of this is a great way to be involved in the community,” Lager said.

Community and committee volunteers helped the children unleash their creativity during the two-hour decorating session.

“I’m not allowed to have candy, so I’m most excited for that at the parade,” said Nerissa Hofman, a 10-year old volunteer at one of the decorating stations.
