Foster care families or families interested in becoming involved in the foster care system are invited to attend Juneau Youth Services’ first foster care awareness event on Saturday. It will take place from 3-5 p.m. at Douglas Island Pink and Chum (DIPAC).
The goal of the event is to allow community members to learn about the different programs available in Juneau — traditional foster care, therapeutic and kinship foster care — and the various ways to participate.
Guest speakers will be Alaska’s first lady Donna Walker, Rep. Ivy Spohnholz (D-Anchorage) and former foster care youth turned advocate Becca Shier.
Other activities include a photo booth, arts and crafts, and shaved ice.
Saturday’s foster care event is free, open to the public and family-friendly. There will be a picnic-style buffet, including hamburgers, hot dogs, side dishes and dessert.
