Expect big construction on Egan this weekend

This weekend should bring good weather, but it’ll also bring headaches for drivers.

Egan Drive will be closed between the McNugget intersection and Mendenhall Loop Road. Starting at 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday, the intersection of Egan Drive and Mendenhall Loop Road will be closed near Mendenhall Mall, requiring drivers to detour.

The closure is necessary to continue the Egan Drive repaving project, the Alaska Department of Transportation announced by email Friday.

Drivers heading from downtown to the Mendenhall Valley will be required to turn left, onto Glacier Highway at the McNugget intersection, then use Riverside Drive and Mendenhall Mall Road to access Mendenhall Loop Road.

Drivers heading from the Valley to downtown will have to perform the process in reverse, using the mall road, Riverside Drive and Glacier Highway to bypass the construction.

SECON Southeast Alaska, the contractor performing the construction, is posting regular updates at egandrive.com. All work is weather-dependent and may change as the weather does, SECON said.
