Death investigation underway at Cope Park

The death of the 29-year-old man is not considered suspicious, police say.

This is a developing story.

An investigation is underway after a 29-year-old man was found dead at Cope Park on Monday afternoon, according to police.

“The investigation is still very early on,” said Juneau Police Department spokesperson Lt. Krag Campbell at about 1:30 p.m. The death is not considered suspicious and next of kin has been notified.

According to Campbell, at about 12:42 p.m. police received a request for a welfare check of a person who was believed to be in the area of Cope Park. Police received another call at about 1:06 p.m. from a resident in the trail area near Cope Park’s parking lot who said they had discovered an unconscious man.

According to Campbell, Alaska State Troopers arrived at 1:07 p.m. to assist JPD in the investigation, and soon discovered the man and began resuscitation, but were unsuccessful in reviving the body.

Alisha Seward, incident commander for Alaska State Troopers, was at the scene at about 1:30 p.m. She said after the initial assist the investigation is now being conducted by JPD.
