Gospel Music workshop and performances run Feb. 15-21

The Juneau Arts and Humanities Council will host a visit from Rev. Bobby Lewis and Eustace Johnson for the fifth year in a row, as part of the JAHC’s annual gospel music workshops and performances.

Workshops run Monday through Thursday evenings, Feb. 15-18, at the JACC, culminating in two Gospel Celebration performances Feb. 21, at 2 pm and 5:30 pm at Thunder Mountain High School.

The annual “Motown for Our Town” performance and fundraiser featuring Lewis and Johnson will be held Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 at the JACC. This year, attendees will be voting for the King or Queen of Motown 2016. Contestants include Enrique Bravo, Sara Radke Brown, Mike Gamble, Jocelyn Miles, and Shona Osterhout. Voting will take place at the event – and all proceeds benefit the Willoughby Art Complex building fund. Tickets range from $5-$22 for both Gospel Celebrations, and tickets for the Motown performance range from $22-$50.

Rev. Bobby Lewis began teaching gospel music in his father’s church in Virginia. He is the executive pastor of Music at Central Baptist Church in Harlem, NYC; his 58-voice choir has been featured on the Today Show and other TV programs. Eustace Johnson is currently the Director of Music at the New Song Community Church in Harlem, New York. He is also the Music Director of the Bobby Lewis Ensemble.

Dr. Jeaunelle Celaire, vocalist from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will join the duo for the Motown performance. They will be backed up by the ‘Juneau Supremes” and accompanied by Adrian Minne and Clay Good.
