First Folio: The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare

Opening reception, Tuesday, July 26, 1-5 p.m. Alaska State Museum.

Exhibit hours: Monday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Admission is free for exhibit and all related events.

Last day: Wednesday, Aug. 24. Exhibit will close at 5 p.m.

 

Lectures

“Who Wrote the First Folio?” Friday, July 29, 5:30-6:30 p.m., SLAM. Shakespeare scholar Jim Hale will talk about John Heminge and Henry Condell, friends and fellow actors of William Shakespeare, and their quest to honor his legacy by compiling his complete works in the First Folio. No tickets required.

“Alaska in the Time of Shakespeare,” Wednesday, Aug. 10, noon-1 p.m., SLAM. Dr. Rick Knecht will share some of the artifacts that he and his team have found at the archaeological site in Nunalleq, which dates back to Shakespeare’s time around 1600, via the Online With Libraries videoconferencing network.

“Shakespeare Explained: Hamlet,” Friday, Aug. 12, 5:30-6:30 p.m., SLAM. Shakespeare Professor Nina Chordas will provide background and context about “Hamlet,” the evening’s reading by Theatre in the Rough. Learn more about these famous plays and better understand the performance.

“Shakespeare Explained: Romeo & Juliet,” Friday, Aug. 19, 5:30-6:30 p.m., SLAM. Shakespeare Professor Nina Chordas will provide background and context about “Romeo & Juliet,” the evening’s reading by Theatre in the Rough. Learn more about these famous plays and better understand the performance.

“Staging from the First Folio: Creating Characters and Directing,” Thursday, Aug. 18, 5:30-7 p.m., Valley Library. International theatre director, Graham Watts, will talk about his book “Shakespeare’s Authentic Performance Texts: The Case for Staging from the First Folio” and specifically about creating a role from the Folio texts and the director’s approach to working with the text. He’ll also speak to the history and legacy of the First Folio to the work being done today in theatre around the world. Sponsored by Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries, Juneau Public Libraries and Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre.

 

Children’s activities

Shakespeare Game Day, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, July 30, valley library. Come play Shakespeare themed games in honor of the First Folio being in Juneau. There will also be the usual games provided by Platypus gaming.

Shakespeare’s characters, sets and stories, Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m.-noon, SLAM. Kids ages 6-12 are invited to participate in an imaginative exploration of Shakespeare’s work by creating their own characters, sets, and stories with guest artist Averyl Veliz. Teachers from the Juneau School District will participate in a special workshop about using Shakespeare in the classroom and take a tour of the new SLAM facility.
