Alaska Robotics Gallery

Alaska Robotics Gallery will host queer activist Anna Bongiovanni in February. Bongiovanni’s comics explore queer community, body trauma and recovery, sexism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia.
Bongiovanni’s visit to Juneau will include two free workshops, cohosted by Juneau Public Libraries. The first, The Nuts and Bolts of Zine-Making!, will be held Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Valley Library from 5-8 pm. The second workshop, Honesty in Comics, will be offered Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Douglas Library from 1-5 pm. See more details on page 3.
KINETIC: A SOLO EXHIBIT OF PAINTINGS BY AVERY SKAGGS

“KINETIC” is an exploration of mark making, created by Juneau artist and REACH client Avery Skaggs. The paintings are a representation of Avery’s physical presence as captured over the course of days and months of work on each piece.
Skaggs and his support team from the Canvas Art Studio and Gallery will talk on the topic of his art making and life as an exhibiting artist on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10:30 am-12 pm.

Annie Kaill’s will feature two artists for the month of February: Robert Fletcher and Constance Baltuck.
Woodwork artist Fletcher will show a selection of his wood bowls and other wood work items hand crafted from primarily local wood such as Alaskan Mountain Ash, Alaskan Sitka Spruce and Alaskan Red Alder. Nearly all of the trees that provided the wood were cut down for other reasons, such as landscaping, house building or windfalls. Fletcher has been involved in woodworking to some degree since middle school, and now that he’s retired, he’s been able to make it more of a focus of his daily life.
Painter Baltuck will show a selection of her latest original paintings, primarily acrylics on canvas. Her images include landscapes from around Juneau and from her travels around the world. Baltuck has been drawing, painting, and showing her work in Alaska since 1982. Her first show at Annie Kaill’s Gallery was in 1984.

Juneau artist Mercedes Muñoz will show a selection of recent works at the Canvas, where she works as the ceramics studio manager. Her functional porcelain pieces tie in to her love of drawing through the use of decals, gold luster, and china paints.
Muñoz, granddaughter of highly regarded Alaskan artist Rie Muñoz, grew up in Juneau and Tenakee Springs and received her BFA in Studio Arts with an emphasis in ceramics at Montana State University, Bozeman.

The Juneau Artists Gallery will feature long time member artist Ella Johnson-Bentley as the featured artist for the month of February. Johnson-Bentley’s artistic talents include beaded jewelry, beaded flower bouquets, miniature waxed linen baskets and fiber art.

“HAVE A HEART FOR SAIL” EVENT

Southeast Alaska Independent Living will host a “Have a Heart for SAIL” event at the Rookery on First Friday. The event will include an artist reception and a silent auction from 4-6 pm, and a ticketed dinner with a select menu beginning at 6:30 pm. Dinner costs $65, with proceeds going to support SAIL’s mission to inspire independence for seniors and people with disabilities throughout Southeast Alaska.

Sealaska Heritage Institute and the Sealaska Heritage Store will host featured artists and give away a Valentine’s Day gift basket at the Walter Soboleff Building for First Friday. Artists will include Doug Chilton, Renee Culp and Rhonda Butler. During the First Friday reception from 4:30-8 pm, SHI will offer free admission to Shuká Hít (the clan house), and the store will offer special discounts, including 40 percent off chocolates and coffee and 20 percent off selected apparel. SHI will pick the gift basket winner by drawing names at 8 pm. The winner does not have to be present at the drawing to claim the prize.

Juneau artist Alexandra Bookless will show a selection of mixed media pieces at the JAHC Gallery. She is a 2010 graduate of Juneau Douglas High School and a current Bachelor of Art candidate. Bookless’ first-ever solo exhibit will include pieces inspired by her time traveling and living in Alaska and the Yukon, and reflects her interest in how the environment in the Pacific Northwest shapes people, and vice versa. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, and ceramic work.

Jerry Smetzer’s 10 oil-on-canvas paintings depict ‘a young woman’s journey through time, and her exploration of events which describe and illuminate our humanity,” according to the artist.
As part of the First Friday event, there will be a mini-seminar and question and answer from 6 to 7 pm. Smetzer will discuss the theme and development of the panels, and will demo some of the images and multi-media techniques used. The mini-seminar will be held in the downstairs conference room at KTOO.
