Comic artist and queer activist Anna Bongiovanni will visit Juneau

Alaska Robotics Gallery is inviting cartoonist and queer activist Anna Bongiovanni to Juneau Feb. 4-6. Bongiovanni is a contributing cartoonist to websites everydayfeminism.com and autostradle.com in addition to publishing comics on their personal website. Her first graphic novel, Out Of Hollow Water, was published in 2014 by 2D Cloud and they are currently working on the second one.

Bongiovanni’s comics explore queer community, body trauma and recovery, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia. Bongiovanni is also known for her work as a youth educator and has worked with Gazillion Strong organizing events where youth meet and create with artists. Bongiovanni has spoken on at comic panels about queer cartoonists, and created lessons plans about feminism, gender, sexuality, and queer history.

Anna’s artwork will be featured in the Alaska Robotics gallery for the month of February, with a reception Feb. 5 from 4:30 to 7 pm. In addition, Anna will conduct two workshops hosted by the Juneau public libraries. These workshops are free to the public with materials provided.

Thursday, Feb. 4, from 5-8 pm at the Mendenhall Valley Library, Bongiovanni will offer The Nuts And Bolts Of Zine-Making, aimed at teenagers and adults.

Saturday, Feb. 6 from 1-5 pm (lunch break at 1 pm) at the Douglas Library, she’ll present Honesty In Comics, aimed at those 14 and up and of all levels, with writing and drawing exercises designed to improve honest self expression through comic art. Activities will focus on unlearning insecurities, drawing more impulsively, and using personal truths to tell better stories, both funny and serious. Participants will have a completed mini comic by the end of the workshop.

Materials will be provided, however if there is a special pen or ink or tool that you love, please bring it!
