Applications available for Simon and Anna Memorial Scholarship

The Simon and Anna Kirk Memorial Scholarship applications are available for 2016. Up to $1,500 is available for a girl and boy who are current seniors at Juneau-Douglas High School, for undergraduate study, vocational school, or supervised apprenticeship training. Annual scholarships will be awarded and may be renewed for up to four years.

Applications are available at the Juneau Community Foundation website, juneaucf.org, or can be obtained from the Counseling Office of Juneau-Douglas High School. All application materials must be received by the Counseling Office on or before April 15.

This scholarship was established in 2014 at the Juneau Community Foundation through a bequest by Michael Kirk, a former math teacher at Juneau Douglas High School, in honor of his parents Simon and Anna Kirk. Kirk established this scholarship as a tribute to his parents who, though not college educated, were intellectually curious, lifelong learners and who strongly encouraged he and his brothers in their academic pursuits.

The scholarships are intended to support students based on their dependability and the effort they show as evidenced by consistently putting forth their best effort, consideration of others trustworthiness and financial need. All students are welcome to apply.

The scholarship committee will make recommendations and announce this year’s scholarships by the end of the school year. Scholarships will be sent to the tax-exempt non-profit or educational institution that awardees will be attending.

For more information, contact Mike Stanley, Simon and Anna Kirk Scholarship Fund Selection Committee, at madslaw@alaska.net or (907) 586-6077, or Barbara Conant, JDHS Counseling Office, at 523-1613.
