I must confess my puzzlement about the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly’s priorities.
First, they turned down $100,000 in sales taxes. Then, they announced the need to cut services (thankfully the City Museum was spared) due to budget shortfalls. Then without notice, the Assembly majority supports $20,000 to a Republican operative to conduct a survey on a dead issue, a person without survey expertise.
If a survey is needed — and it is not — Juneau and Alaska have professional firms capable of conducting nonpartisan surveys. I thank the three Assembly members who recognize this motion as the stunt it is. There is no money for the road to Katzehin, nor should there be.
It seems to me, with the proposed mining ordinance and this proposed “survey” that instead of seeking to bring the community together during these difficult times that the Assembly is doing what it can to revive every devisive issue that has affected the community. Shame on them.
