Opinion: Why I support Jerry Nankervis for House

As a 30-year Juneau resident, I have always shied away from publicly voicing my political opinions. However for the first time ever, I’m openly supporting a candidate for state House, and that candidate is Jerry Nankervis.

Nankervis stands for many things I believe in and are important for Juneau (and Alaska) to thrive: reduction in crime, fiscal stability, job opportunities, and building infrastructure (like the Juneau Access project).

Nankervis’ 24 years with Juneau Police Department provide the credibility to understand and support crime reduction measures. His six years on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly give him the experience to make solid fiscal decisions that will affect our economic destiny, and his years as a commercial fisherman give him the perspective of a person who has to work physically hard for a living.

As a believer in economic development and jobs, Nankervis opposes — as do I — Ballot Measure 1. And Nankervis understands the importance of preserving Juneau as the capital city. He’s been busy building strong, positive relationships with legislators for the past few years as our deputy mayor. The ground is already laid for him to be successful as one of Juneau’s three legislators.

I urge all District 34 residents to vote for Nankervis. As the tagline says, Juneau Needs Jerry. I agree.

Elizabeth Arnett,
