Opinion: Republicans need to back the Russia investigation

Republican support for special council Robert Mueller’s investigation has been disappointingly low. I have been a proud Republican, and one of the central pillars of our party has always been a strong sense of judiciary responsibility and independence. Misguided calls for an end to the investigation from within the party represent a departure from one of our most foundational principles.

I am a firm believer in the Constitution of our country, which explicitly states that no one is above the law. The judicial branch plays an important role in making this concept a reality — a duty that ensures accountability and balance within our government. If we know that President Donald Trump is innocent of all charges related to this investigation, we must allow Mueller to conclude his investigation. Our patience will both protect the Republican Party from unnecessary attacks while showing support for the Constitution and for the rule of law.
