Opinion: Praise for Murkowski’s Statements on Racism, Equality, Justice

I would like to register my support for Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s words.

I would like to register my support for Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s words on the floor of the U.S. Senate, addressing racism in our country and committing to listen, to learn and to be a healer for Alaskans and Americans. “It is our responsibility,” she said, “as Americans who believe in the principles of justice and equality.” She also spoke to a “shared sense of duty and responsibility, speaking up about things that matter…in a way that brings us together, rather than divides.” Sadly, Senator Murkowski’s leadership was greeted with hostility and threats from some who seek to divide us rather than unite us. I applaud Senator Murkowski for the strength of her convictions and her courage to stand up for “those things that matter, like equality and justice” — here in Alaska and across the country.
