Opinion: Fund the ferries

Let’s not “mess this up.”

We have $285 million coming from the federal government for our ferry system. To be awarded the money, however, the state needs to invest matching funds (upwards of $100 million) to ensure the operation and maintenance of new ferries and facilities. The state Legislature and governor’s office should absolutely dedicate these funds. Water is often the most efficient and sustainable way to move freight and people. The ferry is critical infrastructure for communities on the Marine Highway. The funding will bring in new hybrid diesel and electric ferries, provide additional operating funds and upgrade rundown docks. Investing in our Marine Highway is good for Alaskans, good for the environment and worth putting in the budget. As Sen. Lisa Murkowski bluntly put it, let’s not “mess this up.”
