Opinion: Dimond does his homework

I want someone who will do their homework, not just say they will.

I believe Chris Dimond is the best candidate for House District 33 for many reasons. Mostly because he does his research. At a recent forum Sara Hannan stated a 1 percent income tax would generate $700 million. This is flat-out wrong. She is referring to failed House Bill 115 that would have instituted a progressive tax rate starting at 2.5 percent and capped at 7 percent. I spoke to Dimond about this as I was shocked a 1 percent income tax could bring in that much revenue. He told me he spoke with the state tax director and a 1 percent income tax would generate about $220 million. This is based on approximately $22 billion of total state income. He did his homework. He heard a statement that didn’t sound right, he researched the issue, and was able to provide true, hard facts.

This is the type of legislator that we need. Someone who will trust but verify information, not just rely on a statement because it sounds good. Hannan also mentioned that we need “state-operated preschool programs.” Again, if she had done her homework before focusing on sound bites she would know that we have our state-funded Head Start programs in nearly every region of our state serving children ages 3-5.

I’m voting for Dimond on Nov. 6 for House District 33 and I urge you to do the same.

Corey Baxter,

Douglas
