In this challenging electoral time period, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that the decisions and actions that most profoundly influence our daily lives don’t happen at the national level but rather occur right here in our community. It’s for that reason that I want to encourage those of us who call Juneau our home to pay particular attention to the municipal election occurring Tuesday. It’s that election and the decisions we make as to who we want on the Assembly that will most affect what type of place Juneau will be.
I urge all Juneauites to vote on Oct. 4. Our democracy only works if we exercise our right to vote. I also urge everyone of you who is concerned about the future of Juneau to re-elect Kate Troll to the Assembly. Years before Kate officially entered politics, she would write thoughtful and engaging letters to the editor. While I didn’t always agree with her opinions, I was always impressed with the intelligence and thoughtfulness of her views and insights.
As a six-year member of the Juneau School Board, commitment to education is particularly important to me. Kate Troll has been unwavering in her support of Juneau’s schools and children. Education and programs that help children and family are frequently the first targeted for cuts in a tough economy. And as our population ages, including me, sometimes it is easy to forget how short youth is, and how precious the time we have to make sure our community’s children have the foundation they need in order to maximize their potential. Strong schools, strong families and a strong community are our best investment in the future. Kate Troll believes this and she works hard to make sure this continues. Please join me in reelecting Kate Troll for Assembly on Tuesday.
