Letter: I’m endorsing Kate Troll

I moved to Southeast Alaska nearly 25 years ago, so I’m not quite a sourdough, but definitely no longer a cheechako. Some of the first local legends I was exposed to were Kate and Ray Troll; I could see right away that these modern pioneers had earned their place in contemporary Alaskan culture and continue to work tirelessly to honor and preserve the beauty of our chosen home, with art, music, and a deep investment in local politics.

I confess that I first glimpsed Kate Troll on a Folk Fest stage in a weird crab (maybe?) outfit. She was definitely wearing XtraTuffs and having a really good time. Mostly, after that, I saw a more serious side of Kate, through her incisive and intelligent “My Turns” and other evidence of her long-term vision for Juneau. Kate is excited about the possibilities for our community and looks forward to continuing to promote subsidized and non-subsidized housing for strengthening our downtown core, and allowing people of all ages and financial means to have a home in Juneau. Kate believes in equitable access to education, more child care centers, and keeping our city clean and healthy. Yet she is not naïve about our challenges.

Please vote with me on Oct. 4 to keep her on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly so she can continue her projects with better waste management, better public transportation and a comprehensive approach to the opiate problem.

Emily Kane,

Juneau
