Letter: I call on our representatives to lead

Dear U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan and U.S. Rep. Don Young,

I’ll get right to the point. Data indicates the angry, uneducated and socially ignorant elected America’s new president. I call on each of you to demand the president-elect and the GOP address the racial unrest whose flames they fanned to get Trump elected. Concerning aftershocks of such behavior include hundreds of reports of children are being harmed and bullied at schools for not being white, and at the University of Oklahoma, African American students were put on a “lynch-lists.” This is absolutely against everything we value as Americans.

America needs a truth and reconciliation process for healing with the profound undercurrents of racism, sexism and elitism exploited during the Trump campaign. Don’t sell Alaska’s energy opportunities to the GOP so the ignorant can be more overt about their racism. There is little doubt Trump will do something impeachable in the next year, and we will be left with Pence, another anti-science, sexist bigot who also happens to also be a homophobe. You must speak up now. Doing nothing aligns you with these crimes against humanity. You each represent an incredibly diverse constituency. I call on you to lead, be role models, promote peace and find just equitable solutions during these chaotic times in American history. Alaskans are watching and we will remember during the next election cycle.
