I am a longtime citizen of Alaska. I usually have a different point of view than former Senator and Governor Frank Murkowski, but I try to read what he has to say in the Empire. I wholeheartedly agree with his well-written “My Turn” in the Dec. 27, 2023, Empire on “Reviving a duty of service to the country.” He expressed a lot of good ideas and justification for a mandatory draft. I would like to see it combined with a good short course on citizenship with the aim of making young people better informed and participating citizens of our country. Could our congressional delegation introduce a bill in the U.S. Congress to establish such a program?
