The National Park Service has extended the public comment period for a proposed rule to amend its regulations for sport hunting and trapping in National Preserves in Alaska.

The comment period was extended 45 days. Comments can be submitted several ways, but must be turned in by 11:59 p.m. EST on Sept. 6.

The rule change amends sport hunting and trapping rules in National Preserves in Alaska. The proposed rule would remove a regulatory provision that prohibited sport hunting practices that the State of Alaska permits, like brown bear baiting and killing black bears in their dens, or “denning.”

The National Parks Conservation Association has spoken out against the rule change in a statement, calling the hunting methods “extreme.” NPCA is circulating an online petition to voice opposition to the rule change.

To submit a comment, visit the federal eRulemaking Portal at http://www.regulations.gov. Mail or hand deliver comments to: National Park Service, Regional Director, Alaska Regional Office, 240 West 5th Ave., Anchorage, AK 99501.

Comments will not be accepted by fax or email. All submissions received must include the words ‘‘National Park Service’’ or ‘‘NPS’’ and must include the docket number or RIN (1024–AE38). Comments received will be posted without change to http://www.regulations.gov, including any personal information provided.
