ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers say a person has been found dead after a fire broke out in a home in the western Alaska village of Kwethluk.
Troopers say public safety officers in the village controlled the fire and found the person dead inside the structure. Troopers in Bethel were notified of the fire just before 6 a.m. Sunday.
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says some locals used fire extinguishers on the blaze and some people hooked up hoses to a nearby fire hydrant. Peters says the effort came too late and the home is considered a complete loss.
Peters says the body is being transported to Anchorage for an autopsy and identification.
An investigation continues.
Kwethluk is a Yup’ik Eskimo community of nearly 800 located 12 miles east of Bethel.
