Sketch of person of interest in Anchorage slaying released

ANCHORAGE — Anchorage police released a sketch of someone who may have information about one of a series of slayings across the city this year in the hope the public will know who or where the person is.

They are a person of interest in the death of Treyveonkindell Thompson, who was shot several times on July 29. The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of Thompson’s killer.

Thompson, who was riding his bicycle when he was shot, is one of 25 people killed this year in Anchorage, police say. The bike was missing from the crime scene.

“Treyveonkindell grew up in Anchorage and was getting ready to join the U.S. military,” the police department said in statement Sunday. “His mother describes him of having an easygoing attitude and a huge heart filled with compassion. He had a unique way of bringing joy to others.”

Police have declined to say whether the person of interest in Thompson’s case has been linked to any of the other killings.

“I’m not here today to speculate about other cases,” Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz told KTUU-TV on Sunday. “I know we have certain unsolved cases and we are working in different degrees in solving them. Tonight we are specifically targeting this case.”

Nine of the 25 slayings have not been solved. Charges have been filed or arrests made in 11 cases, and police have identified a suspect in three other cases. In another case, the suspect died.

Anchorage is on track to have its deadliest year since 1995, when 29 people were killed.

Police issued an unusual public advisory late last month urging residents to be “extra aware” of their surroundings, noting that crimes often increase at night and early in the morning.
