Updated: Arizona man found dead near Mendenhall Glacier

The man was in Juneau for the summer

Update Sept. 2: Thomas Casey, a 69-year-old man from Arizona, was found dead Monday evening near Mendenhall Glacier, two days after he left for a hike and failed to return, Alaska State Troopers said Tuesday.

Juneau Police Department on Sunday said that Casey, who was visiting Juneau this summer, had gone hiking “on an unknown trail” on Saturday and did not return. A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers on Tuesday says that his cellphone was successfully traced to “a remote spot” between Thunder Mountain Trail and Nugget Creek Trail.

Juneau Mountain Rescue and the SEADOGS, Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, responded to the area and Casey’s body was found near Mendenhall Glacier at 5 p.m. on Monday, “deceased from injuries obtained from a fall.”

Original story: A Juneau visitor has been missing since he left for a hike on Saturday, Juneau Police Department announced Sunday.

Thomas Casey is in Juneau for the summer, according to a post on the JPD Facebook page, and did not return after leaving “for a hike on an unknown trail” on Saturday, Aug. 30. He also was not answering his cellphone. Casey, in a picture provided by police, is an older white man with white hair.

As of Monday afternoon, neither Alaska State Troopers or Juneau Police Department had released any updates or additional information since the initial announcement.

Anyone with information or who has seen Casey, the department writes, is asked to contact Alaska State Troopers at 907-465-4000.
