Update Sept. 2: Thomas Casey, a 69-year-old man from Arizona, was found dead Monday evening near Mendenhall Glacier, two days after he left for a hike and failed to return, Alaska State Troopers said Tuesday.
Juneau Police Department on Sunday said that Casey, who was visiting Juneau this summer, had gone hiking “on an unknown trail” on Saturday and did not return. A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers on Tuesday says that his cellphone was successfully traced to “a remote spot” between Thunder Mountain Trail and Nugget Creek Trail.
Juneau Mountain Rescue and the SEADOGS, Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, responded to the area and Casey’s body was found near Mendenhall Glacier at 5 p.m. on Monday, “deceased from injuries obtained from a fall.”
