With severe winter weather in the forecast for Juneau this weekend, snow is projected to pile up around town.
The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities plows all state roads, including Egan Drive and Douglas Highway, while the City and Borough of Juneau also covers more than 250 miles of streets and roads including Riverside Drive, Main Street and others.
There are numerous ways for members of the public to make snow removal easier for DOT&PF and the CBJ. The city asks that people obey “no parking for snow removal” signs, and that people park their cars off the street as much as possible. People should also not push snow into the street or leave snow on the sidewalk. Additionally, people should not push snow into open ditches, as this blocks drainage and can cause flooding when snow melts.
Garbage cans should be placed at least five feet behind the street curb, and other obstructions should not be placed in CBJ right-of-ways.
If a snow plow damages a mailbox or other property, people are asked to report that to CBJ Streets and Fleet Maintenance by May 1 for any repairs to be done. For more information on that or snow removal in general, the number for Streets and Fleet Maintenance is 586-5256.
