Douglas tree ready for lighting ceremony

The tree is ready. On Friday night, the lights will be, too.

This past Saturday, the Douglas Fourth of July Committee decorated a Christmas tree that stands on the lawn at 1106 Third Street, between the Waterwheel Plaza and the Douglas Community United Methodist Church. The committee also delivered Santa and elf costumes to Treadwell Arena.

Everyone in town is invited to see Mayor Ken Koelsch light the tree, starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The party doesn’t stop there: The Methodist men of Douglas Community United Methodist Church will provide cookies and warm drinks. At 7:45 p.m., there will be a free skate with Santa and his Merry Elves at Treadwell Arena.

The lighting ceremony is sponsored by the Douglas Fourth of July Committee, Douglas Community United Methodist Church and Juneau Parks and Recreation. The lights will be on 24 hours a day until Jan. 6, 2018. The best times to photograph the tree are at early morning or early evening.
