Docks & Harbors to dewater abandoned tug

Goal is to keep it from sinking or rolling over

Notice the abandoned tugboat sitting a little lower lately?

The City and Borough of Juneau Docks & Harbors Department is contracting with Global Diving & Salvage to dewater an abandoned tug this week, according to a press release.

The tug Lumberman is located in Gastineau Channel, near Eagle Creek.

The 107-foot boat’s anchor line broke loose in May 2018, and it drifted to where it now sits in the channel. The boat is in plain view from Egan Drive as people drive between downtown and the Mendenhall Valley.

Global Diving will remove water from the tug that’s accumulated from snow and rain to prevent the vessel from sinking or rolling over. The cost of the work is not to exceed $5,000, according to the press release.
