City holding meeting about playground cleanup Thursday

With the cleanup process set to begin at the Twin Lakes Playground, the city is looking to keep the community in the loop.

The City and Borough of Juneau is holding a meeting at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the Juneau Public Health Center conference room. The meeting is open to anyone, but it is especially important for those who live near Twin Lakes.

The playground, which was built in 2007 with donations and volunteer efforts, was burned down April 24. The CBJ hired a firm to investigate the area after the fire to check for contaminants, revealing that gas was still coming from the debris. It was ruled safe for short-term exposure, but cleanup contractors will be wearing suits to protect from contaminants.

Cleanup of the site is scheduled to begin this month, and cleanup contractors will be monitoring air quality throughout the process. The cleanup project is expected to continue throughout the summer, with the city’s steering committee on the playground starting to design the new playground this fall and winter. The committee will take input from the public in this process, and construction on the new playground will begin next spring.

Correction: The print version of this article erroneously stated that the meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. It’s scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
