The University of Alaska Southeast will hold its first annual Power & Privilege Symposium from 8:15 a.m.-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at its Juneau campus.The symposium will include three keynote speakers, six breakout sessions, and a spoken word poetry performance.
The one day conference-style teach-in is designed to give members of the UAS and Southeast communities an opportunity to come together and engage in difficult, thoughtful and honest conversation about the ways social hierarchies and identities manifest themselves in our communities. Discussions include those about race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, religion, body size, ability, mental illness, class, and their intersectionalities.
Keynote speeches and a selection of breakout sessions will be streamed live over the internet.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged and will be available after Oct. 26 at www.uas.alaska.edu/chancellor/power-and-privilege-symposium.html
The symposium is sponsored by UAS First Year Experience, UAS Student Activities, UAS Native & Rural Student Center, UAS Counseling, SEAGLA, and NAMI.
Most UAS Juneau classes will be cancelled for the day.
